Boosting Your Hydration With Food

Our bodies are made up of 60% water so it’s no wonder water is the universal drink- it keeps us healthy and hydrated. A minimum of eight cups a day is the standard but who keeps track? Society is fast-paced and time consuming so it’s hard to keep up with the basic necessity in life and it’s no wonder a majority of us are feeling dehydrated and sluggish most of the time.

Dehydration accounts for most of our tiredness. When you feel thirsty, you’ve already lost 1-2% of your body fluid which can make you feel lethargic. It also lowers blood volume which means the heart has to pump harder in order for blood to reach your blood and the rest of the body.

Now we know how precious and significant water is, let’s try not to forget to water our bodies. Just like plants need water and sunlight to grow, we also need water and the proper nutrition to stay healthy and strong.

Since I for one find snacking to be more fun sometimes, I’m really interested in which fruits and vegetables do double duty in giving our bodies major doses of nutrition and hydration.

Besides intaking H2O, there are certain types of food to keep in mind when you’re at the grocery store. My mom’s favorite snack of all time when she was pregnant with my brother and still loves them to this day. Cucumber is the Beyonce of hydrating foods with 96% water content. They are also packed with vitamin C which is why they’re so great for soothing puffy eyes after bawling your eyes out.

Crispy Salmon with Watermelon-Mint Salsa


Who doesn’t love the that sweet and refreshing taste in your mouth on that hot and beautiful summer afternoon? Watermelon is the perfect summertime fruit, it’s made up of 92% water making it one of the best hydrating foods.

Gluten-Free Cauliflower Tabbouleh


Honestly, I was surprised when I found out that cauliflower made the list to the best hydrating foods- I’m going to incorporate more of cauliflower into my diet now haha! Cauliflowers are filling and hearty, especially when roasted and it’s 91% water- like wow! It’s packed full of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, fiber, and omega-3’s, one of the most nutrient-dense hydrating foods out there.

Grapefruit is an all time favorite, the ultimate dieter’s food, and it’s no wonder because it’s the closet fruit you can get to calorie-free. Filled with deliciousness, the tart sweetness that grapefruits bring to desserts, salad, or eaten straight up with a tiny sprinkle of sugar brings out the smile to our glowing faces.

Honestly spinach isn’t that bad as it sounds- they are actually quite deliciously especially eaten in soups. Spinach is one of the most nutrient-dense veggies out there. One serving will give you energy-boosting nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and B-vitamins. Eat up!

Melons are just bursting with that juicy sweet flavor we all love. When they’re in season, I absolutely can’t leave a trip to the market without a ripe melon in tow. I usually chop it up the minute I get home and store it in containers in the fridge for the ultimate easy guilt-free snack.

Thank goodness for sweet strawberries- my ABSOLUTE favorite! I honestly can’t live without this amazing fruit. Even on their own, they taste like a treat but if you want to turn the sweet meter up a bit, try chocolate-dipped strawberries- mmm delicioso!

I wasn’t a big fan of zucchinis during my childhood but once I moved out on my own, I tried to incorporate new veggies into my homemade dishes and zucchini happened to be one of them, and honestly, I’m kind of in love.

Grilled, sautéed, or zoodled, there’s no wrong way to cook zucchini. With 94% water content, they’re super hydrating and you can eat them by the cup guilt-free.

Another dieter’s food and famous for being practically free of calories, thanks to all of that water. Celeries are packed with natural salts to help replenish magnesium levels.

Well, not everyone is as lucky as some people who has so much spare time on their hands to actually go and fly across the vacation and bathe in the gorgeous sunlight.

For us working class people, pineapples are the closet we are going to get and honestly, it’s not that bad, if not better. Pineapples are cheaper, less stressful than a vacation and juicier as well because it’s one of the best hydrating foods made up of 87% water, and boasts major digesting and immunity-boosting benefits. So…one bite makes you feel like you’re on a tropical vacay.
